War Graves

The Friends of St Mary's Cemetery are very honoured to have servicemen buried here in the cemetery, which is also the home of the War Memorial for Penketh and Great Sankey.

We have War Graves from both the 1914-18 and the 1939-45 wars. The headstones are maintained but this does not include keeping the plots neat and tidy. Many of these plots are no longer visited. We place a cross and poppy on each of these graves for Remembrance Sunday but we would like to do more to respect these particular graves.

You can sponsor a War Grave. We will infill the top of the grave with golden gravel, we will weed the gravel every month and place flowers with your name and a message once a year. Sponsorship cost is £30 per year. Please use our enquiry facility for further information.

We also aim to renovate the War Memorial which is dedicated only to the fallen from the first and second world wars. We would like to rededicate the Memorial in order to add the names of any fallen serviceman who have bravely given their lives in subsequent conflicts.

This project will be one of the major undertakings of our group and if you wish to get involved  or make a donation please contact us.

Please keep an eye on this page for further updates.
